Nike’s Fun Ad Celebrates the Greats in Women’s World Cup

Nike and creative agency Wieden+Kennedy for an epic campaign film that Nike describes as “A slippery banana peel. A 24-year nap. And a fever dream full of football’s greatest athletes. This is football in 2023—it’s a great day to be awake.” The free-flowing two-and-a-half minutes starts off with a dad and his daughter watching the big game in 1999 when Brandi Chastain became an icon.

Dad, however, slips on a banana peel and wakes up twenty-four years later as the 2023 Women’s World Cup is getting started. He needs a shave and some catching up on things. Obviously.

In a nice piece of copywriting work, the daughter sidesteps the normal “what happened” query following a long coma and proceeds to instead catch him up on all he missed – such as the greats of the game today including Ada Hegerberg, Alex Morgan, Asisat Oshoala, Chloe Kelly, Debinha, Grace Geyoro, Kadeisha Buchanan, Megan Rapinoe, Sam Kerr, Sophia Smith, and Wang Shuang.

“At Nike, we have always firmly believed that the voice of the athlete has the power to change the world, For the last 50 years, we’ve worked with athletes who share our values and vision to move the world forward through the power of sport. As we look to the future, many of our female athletes have a fresh perspective and ambition to create even bigger change.” said Tanya Hvizdak, Nike’s VP, global women’s sports marketing commented.

Accompanying the long-film will be shorter spots promoting individual players.
