OpenAI has launched the OpenAI Academy for News Organizations, a free learning hub offering AI training, tools, and resources for journalists and publishers. The initiative aims to promote responsible AI adoption, improve newsroom efficiency, and support investigative journalism, in partnership with the American Journalism Project and The Lenfest Institute.
OpenAI has launched the OpenAI Academy for News Organizations, a new learning hub designed to support journalists, editors, and publishers in effectively using artificial intelligence (AI) in their work. The initiative is a collaboration with the American Journalism Project and The Lenfest Institute for Journalism, and was unveiled at the AI and Journalism Summit co-hosted with the Brown Institute for Media Innovation and Hearst.
The OpenAI Academy for News Organizations offers hands-on training, playbooks, and real-world examples to help news teams save time and focus on high-impact journalism. The academy includes on-demand training, such as AI Essentials for Journalists, which introduces core AI concepts and newsroom-relevant use cases. Practical use cases focus on investigative and background research, translation and multilingual reporting, data analysis, and production efficiency.
The academy also provides open-source projects and shared resources to make it easier for news organizations to adapt AI tools to their own needs. Guidance on responsible uses, including tips and examples for developing internal policies and governance frameworks, is also available. This emphasis on responsible AI adoption addresses concerns about trust, accuracy, and jobs in the journalism industry.
OpenAI’s partnership with the American Journalism Project and The Lenfest Institute for Journalism has informed the academy’s focus on practical guidance, transparency, and shared learning grounded in real newsroom needs. The company has invested years in supporting a healthy news ecosystem, including partnerships with major publishers like News Corp, Axios, and the Financial Times.
The OpenAI Academy for News Organizations is designed to provide immediate value to newsrooms, with plans to expand the program in the coming year. New courses, case studies, and live programming will be added, offering ongoing opportunities for learning and peer exchange across the industry.
As AI continues to reshape newsroom workflows, the OpenAI Academy for News Organizations represents a structured and responsible pathway for journalists and publishers to explore AI’s potential while safeguarding trust and editorial integrity.
