Kiv Spirits expands its portfolio, buys Ambhar Tequila

New York-based Kiv Spirits has acquired the company behind ultra-premium Tequila brand Ambhar for an undisclosed sum. The move to purchase Ambhar Global Spirits provides Kiv Spirits with entry into the fast-growing ultra-premium Tequila market. Kiv Spirits plans to invest capital into Ambhar Tequila to help it expand in current markets such as the US, the UK, Canada, Mexico, and New Zealand, and enter new markets in Europe and Asia.

Founded in 2009 by Jamie Celorio, the Ambhar range includes plata, reposado, añejo, extra añejo and cristalino expressions. The bottles are adorned with a dragonfly to symbolise luck, joy and the ‘guardians of the agave’, a nod to the dragonflies that flock to the agave fields when the plants are harvested.

Celorio, CEO of the Tequila brand, said: “We are very honoured to have the opportunity to work with Kiv Spirits and the Virdi family who have been remarkable entrepreneurs over the last many decades. “They truly understand our authentic heritage and our commitment to creating a unique artisan experience.”

Through the deal, Iqleen Virdi, CEO and chairwoman of Kiv Spirits, is said to have become the first Indian woman to own a Tequila company.

“As Tequila is growing in the spirits category, Ambhar is well positioned in the top consumption markets and we are looking forward to expanding it to additional upcoming markets,” said Virdi.

“I’m so excited and honoured to lead and be part of this amazing Ambhar team and [I’m] looking forward to an amazing journey ahead with our dragonfly Tequila.”

In December 2021, Ambhar Tequila was due to sell a 51% stake to Entertainment Arts Research. However, the company pulled out of its US$12 million deal amid sexual assault allegations against Ambhar’s majority shareholder, actor Chris Noth.
