“Stop, Check, Protect” – Australian Government Unveils Anti-Scam Campaign

The Albanese government has introduced the Fighting Scams Campaign, a nationwide initiative featuring TV commercials and social media advertisements running until March 22. Designed to empower Australians against the rising threat of scams, the campaign emphasizes three straightforward and memorable steps: Stop, Check, Protect. These practical strategies aim to raise awareness and encourage proactive measures to safeguard personal and financial security.

The key message:

  1. STOP: before sharing personal information
  2. CHECK: that you know who you’re dealing with
  3. PROTECT: against scams by taking actions like reporting them to Scamwatch.gov.au

The Albanese government is implementing a comprehensive plan to make Australia the world’s toughest target for scammers. This approach calls for collective action from government, businesses, and individuals alike.

Early results from the government’s prevention strategy are promising, with reported losses nearly halved since the establishment of the National Anti-Scam Centre. Scamwatch data reveals that scam losses dropped by over 40 percent in the 2023–24 financial year compared to the previous year.

“This campaign is critical to arming Australians with tools and tips to keep their money safe from scammers,” said Assistant Treasurer and Minister for Financial Services, Stephen Jones MP.

“Anyone can be a target of a scammer, so whether you’re 20 or 65, everyone should stay scam alert.”
