This Women’s Day, Shemaroo Entertainment takes a bold step beyond dialogue to drive meaningful change with its #HarRoleIsHerRole campaign—an initiative designed to challenge deep-seated gender biases around ambition, opportunity, and representation.
As part of this thought-provoking campaign, Shemaroo conducted a compelling social experiment featuring 10 artists. Each was tasked with painting portraits of various professionals—a chef, cricketer, scientist, army officer, wrestler, tailor, doctor, pilot, and firefighter. The outcome was striking—all the portraits depicted men, exposing the unconscious gender bias ingrained in our perceptions of professional roles. Through this initiative, Shemaroo sheds light on the urgent need to redefine societal narratives and ensure equal recognition for women across all fields.
Even the occupation charts found in schools—intended to inspire young minds—often reinforce outdated gender stereotypes, portraying men in leadership roles while confining women to professions like teaching or nursing. Refusing to let these biases persist, Shemaroo Entertainment is taking a stand with #HarRoleIsHerRole.
As part of this initiative, Shemaroo has redesigned the traditional occupations chart to ensure equal representation of men and women across all professions. By challenging these ingrained stereotypes at an early stage, the campaign seeks to reshape perceptions and promote gender inclusivity. Taking the movement beyond its own platforms, Shemaroo is actively distributing these revised charts to schools and NGOs, ensuring that future generations grow up seeing a world where every role is truly a woman’s role too.
Arghya Chakravarty, chief operating officer at Shemaroo Entertainment, highlighted the need for industries to take a stand beyond just words. “We recognise the power of media in shaping perspectives and driving change. With #HarRoleIsHerRole, we are not just starting a conversation—we are taking action. Equality isn’t just about opportunity; it’s about visibility. By challenging outdated norms and promoting balanced representation, we ensure that talent and ambition—not gender—define success. This commitment extends beyond our content to our own organisation, where we foster inclusivity, champion equal opportunities, and cultivate diverse leadership. Real change begins with what we showcase, what we teach, and how we lead every day.”
Anuja Trivedi, chief marketing officer at Shemaroo Entertainment, showcased how Shemaroo’s storytelling goes beyond entertainment, driving meaningful change. “At Shemaroo Entertainment, we’ve always believed in the power of stories to inspire change. #HarRoleIsHerRole is more than just a movement; it’s a shift in mindset. By bringing this initiative to life, we aim to shape a generation that grows up seeing the world differently- free from the biases that have held us back for far too long. True change begins with how we see the world, and we are committed to making that vision more inclusive, more equal, and more powerful.”
