The apex Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity will be held from June 21-25, 2021. In a note issued by Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, it says, “Creativity thrives in times of limitation and constraint. If there was ever a year to celebrate creativity that powers progress, it’s this one. A year where everything felt like it changed, and one that will be remembered in history. If you’re planning on entering your work to Cannes Lions Awards 2020/2021, here’s a look back at some of the groundbreaking feats of creativity that have led us to this very moment.” The note signs off by saying, “Time to make history”.
For 2021, the Festival has “refreshed our Creative Effectiveness Lions and introduced a new ‘Market Disruption’ category within the Culture & Context section across 10 Lions”, a media note says on the Festival website.

“The Creative Effectiveness Lions celebrate the measurable impact of creative work. In close collaboration with the industry, our updates for 2021 ensure that the Award accurately reflects the new language of effectiveness, variety of measurable results and breadth of work driving business impact and commercial success.We have also taken principles from the Creative Effectiveness ladder created by Cannes Lions and WARC to embed the shared language for effectiveness measurement and about creativity and how it drives effectiveness,” the website says.
“Work eligible for the Creative Effectiveness Lions must have won or been shortlisted at Cannes Lions 2017, 2018 or 2019. Creative Effectiveness winning work demonstrates the enduring business impact of creativity.”
Earlier media reports quoted Philip Thomas, Chairman, Lions, as saying that “Over the last year, we’ve been consulting with our customers and working on our plans, including the development of Cannes Lions Live as part of the new LIONS Membership platform. We are now able to move fully to this format for 2021 — which will have all the celebration, inspiration and participation of Cannes Lions — to unite the global community virtually during Cannes Lions Live this June.”
Reports also quoted Simon Cook, Managing Director, Lions, as saying, “Cannes Lions Live will also signal the return of the Lions awards. After the benchmark of the awards was paused last year, we want to be able to give our community the chance to immerse themselves in the creative work once again. We’ll be championing the work on a huge scale — tracking progress throughout the week, analysing the winners, delivering insights, identifying new talent — it’s the return of the benchmark and a moment for the industry to reflect but also look forward.”
